Upstream Webinar: Contrasting Upstream Emissions in the Permian Basin
June 7, 2023 09:00 AM – 10:00 AM CDT

Join us for the fourth in a series of regional insights exploring GHG emissions from upstream oil and gas operations, where we will compare plays within the Permian Basin to illustrate the temporal, geologic and geographic differentiation of GHG emissions and intensities, and explore measures operators are taking to reduce emissions from pre-production to production.
Get answers to the following questions:
  • What is the average greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity for upstream operations in such an important US lower-48 basin as the Permian?
  • How do different Permian plays compare, and what distinguishes top-tier from bottom-tier wells?
  • Do we see differences between the Permian and the Bakken, whether during drilling & completion or in the production phase?

GHG emissions intensity from oil and gas production is an important differentiating metric for upstream operators and their stakeholders to understand, reduce and base strategic and commercial decisions on. However, benchmarking remains a challenge because existing voluntary and regulatory reporting does not provide a consistent, comprehensive measure to contrast upstream emissions at a granular level. S&P Global Commodity Insights leverages its deep upstream data, emissions modeling expertise, and data capabilities to produce the most granular GHG emissions estimates, covering the global upstream sector at the well level for North American onshore.

Key agenda items:
  • A comparison of plays within the Permian Basin, illustrating the temporal, geologic, and geographic differentiation of GHG emissions and intensities.
  • Specifically, a comparison of emissions from top and bottom tier wells in different plays
  • Permian vs. Bakken emissions discussion, comparison in D&C and during production.
  • Operator Behaviors: Measures they take to help reduce emissions from pre-production to production: change of power source, methane leak detection, etc.
