Once IMO 2020 rules on cleaner fuels are implemented from January 1, the availability of relatively cheaper fuel oil would rise, making it more attractive for Asia’s power sector. In addition, the resilience of coal in the region’s energy mix remains strong.
So where exactly do opportunities for Asian gas demand lie in 2020?
Join us at the Twin Woes for Asia Gas Demand: Fuel Oil and Slow Economies webinar happening on 18 February to examine:
The coronavirus (COVID-19) has sparked fears of a major economic slowdown in China, the world’s second-largest LNG importer behind Japan, and worldwide. It has also raised concerns about its impact on global LNG trade flows, growing oversupply, falling spot prices and disputes over oil-indexed LNG contracts. Prolonged coronavirus disruptions is likely cut China’s 2020 LNG import growth by 37% on year, which would further weaken sentiment in the north Asian markets, already affected by recession fears, high stocks and less favorable gas policies. Platts JKM plunged to an all-time low of $2.713/MMBtu February 14, and Platts Analytics expects the Asian LNG benchmark to remain below $3.50/MMBtu through Q2-Q3, before seeing some seasonal support toward year-end.
